Seven things in the editor’s bag: a light list for travel days
It has to hold a day without announcing its weight. That is the standard we keep rewriting.
The danger on an interview day is the just-in-case swell. We cut the list to seven pieces and walked it through trips in three cities.
A notebook and a pen that actually writes: digital notes are faster; handwriting still catches tone. A fold-flat tote: sample issues and small gifts have a way of appearing at the end of a conversation. A slim power bank: enough to get back to the hotel, not a brick.
Lip balm, a pocket vial of scent, a spare cloth for glasses — three things that have less to do with packing than with being seen. Last: a sleeve of individually wrapped wipes and a folding umbrella.
For the bag itself, a mid-size tote or a structured carry-all, with an opening you can find by feel and interior pockets that keep order. A darker color lasts longer, and looks it.
Traveling light is not a minimalist performance. It is an honest estimate of the day. What you need is almost always less than the version you packed at midnight.
